You should just to compare/contrast the difference in writing but he didn't really hit his stride until Darkness, Take My Hand and Gone Baby, Gone. You should try to read his other stuff like Mystic River, dark and compelling standalone. He's just usually better than this. I also enjoyed Shutter Island (other readers didn't care for it).
