I'd rather take recommendations about non-romance books from other romance readers than from anyone else (including specialists in their respective genres).

Aoife: I can see myself rereading it again and again. It's a really nice thing to believe, that actions taken purely because they're the right thing to do are going to turn out being exactly the right things politically. Believable in the real world? Maybe not, but I don't care!

Darlynne: From what I know about your tastes, I'd predict you'll love this one! :)

Marianne McA: Yes, Setheris and all the stuff he could do might be a little bit too much, but I was perfectly happy to suspend disbelief there, because I loved everything so much. As for Maia's maturity, that's a good point. I suppose if you compare him with the very few other young people we see, like his nephew, for instance, he doesn't seem overly mature...Rosariohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13015659149421085931noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730322.post-85931929486679588982014-06-12T23:39:21.154+01:002014-06-12T23:39:21.154+01:00I really enjoyed it too. (One ludicrous quibble - I somehow found it troubling that Setheris had been trained as a barrister because in my head barristers belong firmly in this world.)

But everything else I loved. After I finished the book - not during - I did wonder if Maia was just too mature for his age. But on further reflection, I decided I'd no idea at what age goblins or elves normally mature, nor what length a year would be on that world - plus he clearly comes from a line of high achievers on both sides of his family tree.

I already know it's a book I'll reread. It is a wonderful, wonderful book, one of the best things I've read in what feels like forever. I'm in the middle of a reread now, and have just reached the section with Maia's birthday--lovely. One of the most charming things about Maia is how truly good he is, and how uncalculated the things he does are.

This is the book I've been pressing on anyone who complains that s/he hasn't read a good book in ages.

~AoifeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730322.post-71582608243742178652014-06-11T07:04:23.714+01:002014-06-11T07:04:23.714+01:00Yay! I hope more readers give it a shot-- I suspect some romance readers look at the cover and title and assume it's not for them, but I think many of them would enjoy it.Janine Ballardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15697781623708001796noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3730322.post-39707382293805052162014-06-11T04:46:40.030+01:002014-06-11T04:46:40.030+01:00Wonderful review !
